Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island

Established February 17, 1872

Originally part of the Diocese of Boston, Providence was split from Hartford in 1872 and Thomas Hendricken became its first bishop. Initially covering eastern Massachusetts as well, the creation of the Diocese of Fall River in 1904 redrew Providence's borders to be contiguous with the state of Rhode Island.
