Archdiocese of Hartford, Connecticut

Established September 18, 1843

The diocese, whose Catholics were originally served by missionaries such as Fr. James Fitton, initially encompassed all of Connecticut and Rhode Island. William Tyler was the first bishop. With the creation of the Diocese of Providence in 1872, the diocese contracted to the state Connecticut. Its area again decreased, though its status was elevated, when in 1953 the dioceses of Bridgeport and Norwich were erected and Hartford raised to an archbishopric.
