Originally formed from the dioceses of New York and Philadelphia and encompassing the entire state of New Jersey, the diocese of Newark was elevated to the rank of archdiocese in 1937. Its first bishop was James Roosevelt Bayley, the nephew of Elizabeth Ann Seton.
