Fr. William Corby, CSC (1833–1897)

Chaplain, Professor

Born in Detroit, Corby joined the Congregation of Holy Cross and became a professor at the University of Notre Dame. Chaplain of the Irish Brigade during the Civil War, he famously administered general absolution to the troops on the eve of an engagement during the Battle of Gettysburg. He was president of Notre Dame from 1866 to 1872.
