Born in Brooklyn of Irish immigrant parents, McCloskey was ordained a priest for the Diocese of New York in 1834. In 1847, he was tapped to head the new Diocese of Albany and in 1864 became archbishop of New York. In 1878 he was made a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII.
