Archbishop John Martin Henni (1805–1881)

First bishop of Milwaukee, 1844–1881

Born in Switzerland, Henni came to New York in 1821. Ordained in Cincinnati, he was later vicar general of that archdiocese and founded there the German-language Catholic weekly, Der Wahrheitsfreund. He was appointed to the new see of Milwaukee and his role in building the Catholic institutions of the region earned him the moniker "Patriarch of the Northwest."
