Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Ohio

Established June 19, 1821

Bp. Benedict Flaget of Bardstown celebrated the first Mass in what was then the tiny settlement of Cincinnati in 1814. The town prohibited the construction of a Catholic Church, so the first one was built just outside its boundaries, the year following the erection of Cincinnati as a diocese. Shortly after Edward Fenwick became the first bishop, the anti-Catholic ordinance was lifted and the log church was rolled to a new location within the town. In 1850, Cincinnati was made an archdiocese.
