Cardinal James McIntyre (1886–1979)

A Manhattan native, McIntyre was ordained a priest in 1921. He was appointed coadjutor archbishop of New York, to succeed Francis Spellman, in 1946, but he was instead named to head the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1948. In 1953, he became the first American cardinal west of St. Louis.
