Archbishop François Norbert Blanchet (1795–1883)

First archbishop of Oregon City, 1846–1880; "Apostle of Oregon"

A native of Quebec, Blanchet was a pioneering missionary in the vast expanse of the North American northwest. He had already labored six years when Fr. Pierre de Smet and others joined the region's mission work. When the territory was erected into an ecclesiastical province, he became the first archbishop. He was succeeded by Abp. Charles Seghers.
