Brunner was born and died in Europe, but in between he joined and planted in America the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, whose priests and sisters played a pivotal role among the German population of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Archbishop Purcell invited Brunner and his comrades to Ohio in 1843; among the parishes that owe their foundation to Precious Blood fathers are many in the "Land of the Cross-Tipped Churches."
