Bishop Edward Fenwick, OP (1768–1832)

First bishop of Cincinnati, 1822–1832

A Maryland native, Fenwick worked in the mission country of Ohio and built the first Catholic church in that state, St. Joseph near Somerset, in 1818. At the time of his consecration by Bishop Benedict Flaget as the first bishop of the diocese of Cincinnati, his jurisdiction included Ohio, Michigan, and the rest of the old Northwest Territory.
