Archbishop Ambrose Maréchal (1764–1828)

Archbishop of Baltimore, 1817–1828

Maréchal, a French Sulpician, succeeded Leonard Neale to become the third bishop of Baltimore. In the context of the trustee controversies of the day (regarding lay control of parish matters), he reasserted the right of bishops to determine priest appointments.
