St. Peter's was the first Catholic parish in New York City. One of the country's most famous converts, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, was baptized there. Prominent New Yorker Pierre Toussaint worshiped there. The latest installment in the parish's remarkable history was a tragic one, when the landing gear from an ill-fated airliner crashed into the church's roof on September 11, 2001, and its interior became a refuge for stricken New Yorkers.
