Mission San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo)

San Antonio, Texas

Founded 1718

First called San Antonio de Padua, the mission was renamed in honor of the King of Spain's vicerory, Marquis de Valero. Father Olivares founded San Antonio, moving the mission to its present site after six years of struggle culminating in a hurricane.

The mission underwent various uses in the nineteenth century, including serving as a fort for the defenses of the nascent Republic of Texas.
