Then-Father (later Bishop) Jean Cheverus enlisted the architectural expertise of Charles Bulfinch in the construction of Boston's first Catholic church. When the Diocese of Boston was erected in 1808, the church became the city's cathedral. It was demolished in the 1860s to make way for a larger building.
