Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia

Established July 19, 1850

When West Virginia broke from Virginia in 1863, the territories of the dioceses of Wheeling and Richmond were split betwee the two states. In 1974, the West Virginia see was renamed Wheeling-Charleston, and the boundaries of the old dioceses were redrawn to be coterminous with their respective states.
