This charitable organization had its origins in the Covenant Community, formed in 1970 by Fr. Bruce Ritter, Adrian Gately, Patricia Kennedy, and Paul Frazier. Incorporated in 1972, Covenant House quickly grew into a series of homes for troubled youth and then extended into other charitable outreaches as it expanded outside of New York City. In 1990, the organization went through a crisis as its founder president, Fr. Ritter, was accused of sexual and financial improprieties. It implemented reforms and gradually recovered its reputation and financial soundness.
