The first St. Joseph Church was built to serve Pueblo San Jose, which was the secular community attached to Mission Santa Clara. The present structure, the fifth to serve its congregation, was dedicated in 1877, became the cathedral of San Jose in 1990, and was made a basilica in 1997.
