Chicago, Illinois

Founded 1874

When the Servite Fathers founded the Church of Our Sorrowful Mother, it stood amid prairie grasses to the west of the town of Chicago. A new, larger church was completed in the 1890s, to accommodate the booming populations of the city's west side. In the late 1930s, the church's novena devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows attracted 70,000 people to thirty-eight services each Friday.
