Archdiocese of Miami, Florida

Established October 7, 1958

Coleman Carroll became the see's first bishop when it was carved out of what had been the Diocese of St. Augustine (and, originally, the Diocese of Louisiana and the Floridas). The rapid growth of the area's Catholic population prompted Rome to elevate it to archdiocesan status just ten years later.
