Archdiocese of Baltimore

Established November 6, 1789

At the request of the American clergy, Pius VI established this, the first Catholic diocese in the United States. The American priests were granted the privilege of electing its first bishop, and they chose John Carroll. The premier American see was raised to the status of archdiocese in 1808.
