Born in Virginia (later West Virginia), Ewing's long career in politics included stints as U.S. Senator from Ohio, Secretary of the Treasury under President William Henry Harrison, and Secretary of the Interior under President Zachary Taylor. He was received into the Church late in life by Archbishop John Purcell.
