Bp. Stephen Soter Ortynsky (1866–1916)

First Eastern Catholic Bishop in the United States

Born in Galicia (Ukraine), Ortynsky was ordained a Basilian priest in 1891. In 1907 he was appointed as the first bishop representing Eastern-rite Catholics in the United States and emigrated from Galicia. He was given full, independent jurisdiction over all eastern Catholics in the country in 1913 when a Byzantine Ordinariate was created in Philadelphia.
