Born in Canada, Neuhaus worked as a Lutheran pastor in Brooklyn, and became active in the American Civil Rights movement. He later founded the Institute on Religion and Public Life, which publishes the monthly journal First Things. A convert to Catholicism (1990) and author of important works such as The Naked Public Square (1984), Neuhaus became a major figure in American Catholicism and political conservatism.
