Hillenbrand grew up in Chicago, where he entered the seminary for that archdiocese. He was ordained in 1929, and soon became rector of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, where he promoted the liturgical renewal. He continued to do so while he served as a parish priest from 1944 to 1974.
