Civil War general

Born in Albany, New York, Sheridan's family moved to Ohio when he was young. Entering the army, he became an infantry officer and served in Indian wars before the outbreak of civil war. He advanced to the rank of brigadier general and commanded the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac. After the war, he succeeded William Sherman as commander-in-chief of the army.
