Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange, OSP (ca.1780–1882)

Foundress of the Sisters of Providence

Born in the Caribbean, Lange came to the United States from Cuba. Settling in Baltimore in 1813, she helped to found a school for the children of Haitian immigrants. In 1829, her mission of educating black children was formalized as a new religious congregation, the Oblate Sisters of Providence.
