A Maine native, Avery moved to Boston after her marriage. She became involved socialist agitation in that city, but became disillusioned with the movement and converted to Catholicism in 1904. She remained committed to the cause of the working class, now championing the ideas of Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum. With David Goldstein, she founded the Catholic Truth Guild in 1916.
