Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roche Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (1757–1834)
Lafayette was a French aristocrat who supported the American cause for independence. He fought with Washington and played an important diplomatic role in bringing to the Americans the military support of the French Crown.
