Blessed Marianne Cope (1838–1918)

Mother Marianne immigrated from Germany with her family in 1840. She joined the Sisters of St. Francis in Syracuse, New York and supervised St. Joseph Hospital there. Having risen to the position of provincial superior of her community, she set out with other sisters in 1883 to care for the lepers of Hawaii. In 1895, she took charge of the home for lepers that had been founded by Blessed Damien.
