Irish by birth, Haughery settled first in Baltimore and then, in 1835, in New Orleans. Widowed shortly thereafter, she donated time and money to the cause of orphans, cooperating especially with the Sisters of Charity. She started dairy and bakery businesses, which prospered and provided more funds for her charitable works. Upon her death, the city of New Orleans erected a monument to Haughery, naming the surrounding park, "Margaret Place."
