Bishop Henry Conwell (1745–1842)

Bishop of Philadelphia, 1820–1842

A native of Ireland, Conwell was appointed bishop and sent to Philadelphia in 1819. The see was riven with a trustee controversy at St. Mary's parish and Conwell's tenure was constantly troubled and ultimately doomed by it. Bp. Francis Kenrick took over administration of the diocese in 1830.
