Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850–1917)

First American to be canonized a saint

Cabrini, a native of Italy, came to the United States in 1889. She had desired to be a missionary in China, but Pope Leo XIII advised her, "Do not go to the East, but to the West." Foundress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, she established schools and hospitals across the nation.
