Venerable Félix Varela y Morales (1788–1853)

A native of Havana, Cuba, Varela became a priest for that archdiocese in 1823. His views on Cuban independence and slavery, widely disseminated due to his status as an intellectual, drew the ire of the Spanish authorities and he fled to the United States. He was a prominent priest in the diocese of New York and known there for serving the poor, though he died at St. Augustine, Florida.
