Fr. Felix-Joseph Barbelin, SJ (1808–1864)

"Apostle of Philadelphia"

Born in Alsace-Lorraine, Barbelin came to the United States in 1830 and entered the Jesuit novitiate at Whitemarsh, Maryland. Following a period of teaching at Georgetown College, he was assigned to St. Joseph's Church in Philadelphia, where he served as pastor from 1844 until his death. He played a major role in the establishment of countless Catholic organizations and institutions, including St. Joseph's College.
