McGlynn publicly supported the New York mayoral candidacy of Henry George, radical reformer and author of Progress and Poverty. The move was expressly against the orders of his archbishop, Michael Corrigan, and led to McGlynn's excommunication in 1887, though the sentence was reversed five years later.
