Bishop Denis J. O'Connell (1849–1927)

Bishop of Richmond, Virginia, 1912–1926

A native of Ireland, O'Connell was ordained for the Diocese of Richmond in 1877. He was rector of the North American College from 1885 to 1895. As a result of ecclesial political fallout resulting from the Americanist Controversy, he was removed from his position there, though he ended up as rector of Catholic University, 1903–1909. He was appointed to head his home diocese in 1912.
