Daniel Rudd (1854–1933)

The son of Catholic slaves, Rudd was born near Bardstown, Kentucky. In 1884, in Springfield, Ohio, he founded the first Catholic periodical published by African-Americans, the American Catholic Tribune. In 1889, he organized the first National Black Catholic Congress, where Fr. Augustine Tolton celebrated Mass.
