Father Charles Uncles, SSJ (1859–1933)

First black priest ordained in US

A Maryland native, Uncles studied for the priesthood at Baltimore's St. Mary's Seminary. A few other priests of African descent had served in the United States (Augustine Tolton, for example), but none had been ordained in a US diocese. After his ordination in 1891, Uncles helped to form the Society of St. Joseph, at whose seminary he taught for the rest of his life.
