Charles Calvert (1637–1715)

Third Lord Baltimore, Governor of Maryland

Son of the colony's founder, Cecil, Charles came to Maryland in 1661 and became proprietor upon his father's death in 1675. He returned to England in 1684 to resolve various disputes. Protestant revolution in Maryland, meanwhile, removed the Calverts from power, and Charles remained in England for the rest of his life. His son Benedict having conformed to the Church of England, Charles was the last Catholic Lord Baltimore.
