Alexis Carrel (1873–1944)

Biologist

Born in France, Carrel worked in the United States from 1905 to 1939 at the University of Chicago and the Rockefeller Institute (New York). He contributed to major advances in medical knowledge, including wound treatment and blood circulation, and won a Nobel Prize in medicine in 1912. His reputation was tainted by his association with Vichy France and his support of eugenics.
