Founding of Sisters of Mercy convent

Pittsburgh, PA

December 22, 1843

The Sisters of Mercy were formed in Ireland in 1831. At the invitation of Bp. O'Connor, seven sisters came to Pittsburgh from Carlow, Ireland, under the leadership of Mother Francis Warde. From this first foundation of Sisters of Mercy in the United States, the congregation spread rapidly and distinguished itself in the fields of health care and education.
