Pascendi Dominici Gregis (On the Doctrines

of the Modernists) Issued

September 8, 1907

Pope Pius X's encyclical condemned a variety of theological errors under the rubric of "modernism." Primarily directed against a group of European intellectuals, the encyclical did not provoke as much controversy in the United States. Efforts to root out modernism in this country did result in several bitter cases, however, including the shuttering of the New York Review, a Catholic journal perceived to be too sympathetic to modernist methods of biblical study.
