The Desegregation of St. Louis University 
June 6, 1944
When five African-Americans stepped into class, St. Louis University became the first historically white institution of higher education in a former slave state to admit blacks. The event was set in motion by the conscience-stirring sermon of Fr. Claude Heithaus, S.J., several months earlier.
