American bishops had long desired a catechism suited to the educational needs of the United States, but it was not until the demand was reiterated during the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore (1884) that the project was undertaken. A committee of six bishops produced the original version, which was subsequently published innumerable times and with many amendments. Some version of the text was the standard source for religious education for Catholic students until the 1960s.
